We've all played Super Mario Bros., but few of us have done it correctly
The original Super Mario Bros. is a high-stakes game. You don't have the option of saving states or setting level passwords. When you run out of lives, the game is finished. If you wish to play again, you must begin at World 1-1, regardless of whether you lost your third life on the first level or on World 8-4. So we reasoned.
Millions of people have played Super Mario Bros. under such rules, and millions more have been humiliated and defeated. It's enough punishment to go through 32 levels of Bowser-infested Mushroom Kingdom just to succumb to the beast himself in the game's closing minutes. To be exposed to "World 1-1," followed by that upbeat theme song? Torture.
However, it turns out that there was never any necessity to replay the full game whenever you lost. From 1985 to the present, you have been allowed to restart the World you died on, regardless of how many game overs you receive. There's no need for Game Genie.
While this Super Mario Bros. secret has been floating around the internet for years, RetroGamingOnline's latest TikTok video helped it become popular. With 2.1 million views and 108,000 likes and climbing, it has alerted a new generation of players to this long-forgotten NES secret.
This method works with any version of the original Super Mario Bros., including the original NES, Wii U Virtual Console, and Nintendo Switch Online, so you can test it out for yourself. Allow the game to return to the title screen the next time you lose all of your lives. Hold down the A button and then push the Start button. Instead of starting from 1-1, the game will continue at the first level of the last planet you died in.
That is, if you died in World 4-1, you will see World 4-1. If you lose 7-3 in World, you start from 7-1. So you'll still have to replay any levels you've already completed in the globe, but it definitely beats starting again.
