Miss Argentina and Miss Puerto Rico, former competitors, are now married

Maybe we should all get married instead of competing against one other?
Miss Argentina (Mariana Varela) and Miss Puerto Rico (Fabiola Valentn), who both finished top 10 in the competition, announced their wedding in a recent Instagram clip over two years after meeting during the 2020 Miss Grand International pageant (which actually took place in March 2021!). That's what we mean by a hard launch.

"After agreeing to keep our relationship private, we let them in on a particular occasion." "28/10/22," an Instagram translation of the combined reel's description says. The clip itself is a beautiful vignette of highlights from their almost two-year romance, featuring glow-y beach outings, photos of the two embracing in bed, a snapshot of "TE AMO" written in rose petals on a bed, and "MARRY ME" written in gold and silver balloons. The clip concludes with what seems to be a courthouse wedding, with the two beauty queens posing outdoors in white.

Varela has reacted to Instagram commentators giddy with love since announcing their nuptials, adding, "We are extremely pleased and fortunate." I wish you a multiplication of the love you show us! ”
Prior to the announcement of their wedding, both women were heavily featured on each other's Instagram feeds, including an April 2021 post from Valentn of the two at the beach, in which she calls Varela's friendship "one of the great gifts in this experience." Another post shows the two spending the holidays last year in Puerto Rico together. However, their wedding announcement is the first time the two have talked publicly about their relationship status.

This is a typical instance of discovering "love in a hopeless place," as The Cut's Olivia Truffaut-Wong called it. Beauty pageants have long been renowned for subjecting candidates to racism, sexism, fatphobia, transphobia, all kinds of toxicity, and even sexual misbehavior. More lately, there have been positive, progressive movements, such as Thai billionaire and trans woman Anne Jakkaphong Jakrajutatip acquiring the Miss Universe organization last week. The group was previously controlled by known transphobe Donald Trump, who sold it in 2015.

Varela and Valentn's romance has a lot of the same feel-good energy as Jakrajutatip taking over Miss Universe to, in her words, "evolve the brand for the next generation." Beauty pageants have often been centered on cis-heteronormative beauty and desirability standards created by and for the entertainment of straight men. It wasn't on my pageant Bingo card that a pageant could bring to life a genuinely lovely love story between two lesbian women, but I'm delighted it did! And I hope that, in the aftermath of Jakrajutatip's purchase of Miss Universe and Varela and Valentn's marriage, there will be even more LGBTQ-inclusive movements from the realm of international beauty pageants.
