The man who played the Green Ranger in several incarnations and was a fan favorite has gone.
According to various claims on social media, and verified by a TMZ official, former Power Rangers star Jason David Frank committed suicide. Frank was an early Mighty Morphin Power Rangers star, making his debut in 1993 as Tommy Oliver, the originally wicked Green Ranger who subsequently became a decent man and then the White Ranger. Throughout the decades-long run of Power Rangers series, he repeated his role as a prominent character or in a special appearance. Frank was 49 years old.
Power Rangers, particularly the original series, was notorious for using stock footage from a Japanese Super Sentai show for its fight scenes, in which regular teenagers are transformed into super-powered warriors, which caused some issues for the producers when Frank's Tommy Oliver became a fan favorite. Because they only had so much footage of the Sentai equivalent of their Green Ranger, they had to introduce various plot points that kept Tommy Oliver off the board (at least in terms of the Rangers fighting monsters) for a while, such as when Tommy lost his Ranger powers and was later reborn as the White Ranger.
A similar problem arose in other Power Rangers shows, but Frank remained a fan favorite, appearing in Power Rangers Zeo, Power Rangers Turbo, Power Rangers Wild Force, Power Rangers Dino Thunder, Power Rangers Super Megaforce, Power Rangers Hyperforce, and Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel, as well as the 1995 and 1997 Power Rangers movies and the 2017 Power Rangers reboot (in which he had a cameo appearance).
Frank was a trained MMA fighter with significant understanding of several martial arts forms outside the Power Rangers. His four children survive him.
