The Legion of Super-Heroes Trailer Unites Past and Future Heroes

DC's Heroine of Tomorrow collides with future heroes
While Warner Bros. has spent the last decade or so attempting to bring DC Comics films into some kind of cohesion in live action, its animated movie production has stayed rather steady. Over a dozen films based on or inspired by the New 52 line of comics were released in the 2010s, and were later rebooted into a new series of films beginning with Superman: Man of Tomorrow and Batman: The Long Halloween in 2020. Next year's Legion of Super-Heroes expands on the now five-film franchise by featuring one of DC's B-tier superhero teams alongside Superman and Supergirl.

Supergirl (Meg Donnelly) arrives on Earth, eager to battle with her cousin, although with the challenges that come with being a first-time hero. Superman (Darren Criss) transports her to the 31st Century, where the Legion Academy is eager to teach her the ways of the superhero. Having Brainiac 5 (Harry Shum Jr.) as a student isn't ideal for Kara Zor-El, but it's something she finally accepts if it means she won't be able to level buildings while battling crime.
During her stay at the Academy, Kara and her classmates, including Mon-El (Yuri Lowenthal), Timber Wolf (Robbie Daymond), and Phantom Girl (Gideon Adland), find that the school is being attacked by a criminal organization known as the Dark Circle. With the original Legion members lost in combat, it is up to Kara and the rest of the students to stop the Circle and save the school.
Kara collaborating with the Legion isn't new; aside from the futuristic squad shown in Supergirl, both Superman (through the Legion of Superheroes cartoon from 2005) and his son Jon (by Brian Michael Bendis and Ryan Sook's 2019 comics run) have spent time in the 31st Century. Young Justice: Phantoms, which aired lately, also included several members of the squad. What will be intriguing to see is what more the Legion has in store for us, and what actions James Gunn and Peter Safran will take to guarantee that we see more of these characters in the future.

Legion of Super-Heroes is scheduled to be released on February 7, 2023.
