For the First Time in Decades, Batman and Spawn Cross Over

It's a running joke that Warner Bros. will put Batman in anything, from Fortnite to shows for toddlers to podcasts. Crossing over and getting into other people's business is part of the Dark Knight's whole thing, and one of the most popular crossovers of the bunch was a pair of 1994 one-shots, Spawn/Batman by Frank Miller and Spawn creator Todd MacFarlane, and Batman/Spawn: War Devils by Alan Grant, Doug Moench, Chuck Dixon, and Klaus Janson. And, because crossovers are all the rage these days, the two are reuniting to do it all over again.

Batman/Spawn was announced in the summer, but as the book's December release date approaches, DC has released an animated trailer to promote the one-shot. The story, written by MacFarlane and drawn by recurring Batman artist Greg Capullo, begins when the Court of Owls asks Spawn to do what they can't: kill Batman. While it does not appear to be in the same continuity as the previous crossovers, it is unlikely to benefit the Owls.

Spawn himself is no stranger to crossovers, with the most recent being his appearance in NetherRealm's Mortal Kombat 11, following previous attempts by MacFarlane and NetherRealm to include him in previous games. The Image character also appeared briefly in the film adaptation of Ready Player One in 2018, and who can forget Spawn's appearance in Soul Calibur II back in 2002? Perhaps he'll appear in Fortnite once his movie looks like it'll be released.

Batman/Spawn will be available on December 13th. If you're feeling nostalgic after watching the trailer, both Spawn/Batman and War Devils will be reprinted in a single Collected Edition bundle on November 15.
