Quiboloy loses Cyber Libel suit against Pacquiao
The Davao City Prosecutor's Office has effectively dismissed the cyber libel charges filed against former Senator Manny Pacquiao by international evangelist of the Jesus Christ the Name Above Every Name pastor Apollo Quiboloy.
The six-page resolution, signed by prosecutor Jose Charito Cortez II and approved by Davao City prosecutor Jhopee Avancea last week, argued that Quiboloy's complaint against Pacquiao, who ran but lost in the presidential election on May 9, was unconvincing.
"The complainant's contention that the various press releases of herein respondent constitute proof of the latter's malicious intent is not convincing," according to a section of the six-page resolution.
Quiboloy's cyber libel charges against Pacquiao stemmed from the former senator's refusal to attend the presidential debates sponsored by the evangelist's Sonshine Media Network International (SMNI) and held at the Okada Hotel.
Pacquiao stated that he was unable to attend the debate due to the nature of the allegations against the pastor in the United States.
"As much as I would like to participate in every debate and public forum related to my presidential campaign," the prize-winning boxer said, "I am compelled to decline the invitation of Sonshine Media Network International, which is owned by Apollo Quiboloy, who, according to the US government, has molested and abused children."
He also stated that he cannot "participate in any activity organized by a man wanted for detestable crimes and who unconscionably used the name of the Lord in vain for religious scams," referring to Quiboloy.
Prosecutors in Davao City determined that Pacquiao's statement about his refusal to attend the SMNI-sponsored debate was not malicious.
Earlier this month, the Court of Tax Appeals dismissed Pacquiao and his spouse's P2.2 billion case on alleged tax arrears from his boxing purse, ruling that the assessment was "void" because it lacked factual basis.
