Over the age of 55, Filipinos are the most likely to be gamers
Two-thirds of those aged 55 and up in the Philippines (65%) play mobile or video games. Thailand comes in second place for elderly gamers (59%) followed by Indonesia (57%) and Singapore (4%). (56%). Senior citizens are least likely to be seen playing games in Malaysia and Vietnam (34% and 30% respectively).
YouGov's latest gaming and eSports data: The next-generation white paper examines the global landscape of video games and eSports in 24 markets. YouGov Asia Pacific looks at gaming habits in six ASEAN countries – Singapore, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia – to see how gamers differ between them.
Thailand has the most gamers out of the six ASEAN countries, with more than eight out of ten (82%) playing mobile or video games. The Philippines (80%), Indonesia (77%), and Singapore are all close behind (76%). Malaysia has the fewest gamers in the region, with only six out of ten people (60%) admitting to playing mobile or video games. With the exception of Singapore, where gamers are almost evenly split between men and women, data from the other five countries shows that gamers are more likely to be men.
YouGov investigated the prevalence of console use and access in ASEAN ahead of the launch of Sony's PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's Xbox Series X. When it came to determining which country has the most console ownership or access, Indonesia came out on top, with over half of the population (55%) being able to get their hands on one. Thailand and Vietnam (both 52%), the Philippines (50%), and Singapore round out the Top 5 (46%). Malaysians have the lowest likelihood of owning or having access to a gaming console (42%).
Though it is unclear whether the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X will be the more popular console this year, the PlayStation 4 is clearly the console of choice in ASEAN right now. The PlayStation 4 is the most popular console in five ASEAN countries, with the majority of people owning or having access to one. Philippines (11%), Thailand (12%), Vietnam (12%), Malaysia (15%), and Singapore (15%) are the countries in question (15%). Singapore is the only country where owning/having access to a PlayStation 4 and owning/having access to a Nintendo Switch are linked (both 15%). The only exception is Indonesia, where the PlayStation 3 is the most popular game (19%).
