This is not a statement I planned to write today, but it is now an unavoidable truth that you may go to sleep listening to the dulcet tones of the Autobots' leader... When he narrates the terrible battles that engulfed his home planet Cybertron before to his arrival on Earth Good night!
To be more specific, you'll need to have access to the hugely popular meditation/relaxation/sleep assistance app Calm—specifically, the Calm Kids iteration—to hear Optimus narrate a "Sleep Story," which the company describes as "soothing tales that mix music, sound fx, and incredible voice talent to help you drift into dreamland." However, in both old cartoons and recent live-action films, Optimus is voiced by Peter Cullen, whose deep, low, soothing voice seems tailor-made to lull just about anyone to sleep, regardless of what he was reading. You may listen to a too-brief 30-second teaser of the Sleep Story over at Calm.
"This never-before-heard Transformers story tells the history of the Autobots and Decepticons, taking listeners deeper into the More-Than-Meets-the-Eye themes of the iconic franchise, exploring bravery, leadership, friendship, and STEM," according to the press release. I'm curious how much emphasis will be placed on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the recording, given that 1) virtually all of the STEM in Transformers is made up, and 2) I There's no way in hell that whatever truth I heard would stick with me come morning, no matter what robot told it to me.
"Transformers: History" is now available on the Calm Kids app. If we're lucky, the next installment will have terrorist commander Cobra Commander reading a bedtime tale about the time he developed an entire game show simply to make G.I. Joe seem good. Joe is perplexed.
