Mirabel is the only kid in the Madrigal family that lacks magical abilities in Disney's Encanto, and the film may disclose the exact reason why. Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz), a teenager, enjoys being a member of the Family Madrigal despite the fact that she lacks magical abilities. Unfortunately, her obvious lack of magical skills makes her feel like an outsider all the time. When the family's magical mansion begins to fracture, Mirabel's lack of powers may be just what the Madrigals want. And the voyage may finally provide Mirabel with the opportunity to make her high-achieving family proud.
The Theory Behind Mirabel's Lack of Powers in Encanto
The Madrigal family is unaware of their magical abilities. Abuela Alma (Mara Cecilia Botero) just knows that the magic come after the awful loss of her husband Pedro. The magic manifested itself in the form of an enchanted candle, the magical house, and the family's exceptional talents. Members of the Family Madrigal then use their abilities to protect and strengthen the community around them. Mirabel's sister Luisa's (Jessica Darrow) strength, for example, enables her to lift donkeys and carry the family's hefty burdens. In the song "Surface Pressure," she even speaks about her obligations.

Mirabel may not have any special abilities, but there might be a reason for this. Mirabel was intended to lead the town into the modern world, according to a fan hypothesis (via Reddit). The Family Madrigal's power, according to the notion, helped safeguard the town surrounding them and allowed the inhabitants to prosper. It did, however, protect the town and the family from the outside world. Mirabel can lead the hamlet into contemporary times and a world without magic because she lacks abilities. Mirabel will safeguard the family and the town in the same way as Abuela Alma did in the past.

There is a lot of evidence to support Mirabel's lack of gifts argument. In the film, for example, when the family begins to lose their abilities and become regular, Mirabel is the one who helps lead them and address the flaws in their foundation. Mirabel is poised to lead the family and the town into the future, just like Abuela Alma did in their time of need. Abuela Alma even claims at the conclusion of the film that she sought Pedro for assistance and that he sent Mirabel to share the burden. Mirabel is becoming the family leader, so it's understandable that she doesn't have a present. After all, Abuela Alma lacks a talent as well, but it doesn't stop her from directing the family.

Of course, the possible Encanto idea makes some jumps as well. For example, while the family begins to lose their magical talents in the film, they regain them towards the conclusion, and the town assists in repairing their magical dwelling. Despite learning great lessons, Mirabel and his family are practically back where they started by the end of the film. The Family Madrigal is still magical, and the community is still protected by a Madrigal-created bubble. Of course, a sequel to Encanto might change things in the future. After all, as Luisa sings in the film, the Madrigal obligations entail "never-ending strain."
