Ex-OG captain N0tail: It's difficult to balance life with a pro Dota 2 career

Johan "N0tail" Sundstein, former OG captain and two-time The International (TI) champion, recently shared his thoughts on the professional Dota 2 landscape in a podcast, saying that it was "hard to have a life next to [Dota 2]" and that competing at the highest level was "too stressful" and "unhealthy."

"The competition basically asks for all of your time, so you have to be ready to sacrifice all of your time; if you're not the best, if your peak, talent, and whatever else you have isn't good enough, then the only thing you can do is work harder," N0tail said on the Monkey Business podcast on January 11th.

"It's asking for so many more days, so many more hours than it did in previous years, and it's too stressful for people like [Team Secret captain Clement "Puppey" Ivanov], [Nigma Galaxy captain Kuro Salehi "Kuroky" Takhasomi], and me, people who have been doing this for ten years in Dota 2, it's too much, it's unhealthy, and it's not fun."

N0tail stated that he believed the current Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) setup was the reason combining real life with a pro Dota 2 career was so tough.

In the 2021-2022 DPC, players must compete throughout three Tours in the Winter, Spring, and Summer, with each Tour including up to five weeks of online regional leagues followed by a LAN Major.

This season varies from past models in that the three Majors no longer award the same number of DPC points, which determine whether a team obtains an all-important direct invite to TI.

More DPC points are now awarded with each subsequent Major, which means that teams that do well in the first Major of the season will no longer be assured a straight entry to TI as in past years.

"Dota isn't so much about peaking anymore," N0tail stated of the current format. It's about getting through the year and then peaking at TI."

The former OG captain noted that the season-long grind, as well as the fact that winning a Major is no longer a guarantee of a ticket at TI, makes the strain of competing at the highest level even more unpleasant for pro players.

"You must be prepared once a week, which is an illusion since it is not one day a week." You must prepare as if it were a few days before, and you must always be prepared "N0tail said.

"You might argue that you have to watch every game, see the meta grow, and the pubs since there is so much time between official matches that the meta very rapidly is assimilated in public games that you soon fall behind if you only watch official matches."
