Mirabel Accidentally Ruined Her Own Gift in Encanto - Theory Explained

Mirabel is the only kid in the Madrigal family who did not get a present in Encanto, and a little detail suggests it may have been her fault

In Encanto, Mirabel Madrigal does not get a present, and a minor detail may eventually explain why. Mirabel Madrigal (Stephanie Beatriz) is the only kid in the Madrigal family who does not get a miraculous gift in Disney's Encanto. Her sister Luisa (Jessica Darrow), for example, has superhuman strength and can carry donkeys with one arm. Camilo (Rhenzy Feliz), one of her cousins, also has the ability to shapeshift into other persons, notably their enigmatic Uncle Bruno (John Leguizamo). Mirabel, on the other hand, takes it upon herself to figure out why the enchanted mansion they dwell in is falling apart.

Encanto, the 60th film in the Disney Animated Canon, features a star-studded ensemble. Along with Beatriz as Maribel and Leguizamo as Uncle Bruno, Doom Patrol's Diane Guerrero plays Mirabel's sister Isabel, and That '70s Show's Wilmer Valderrama plays Agustn, Mirabel's father. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of Hamilton, is also in charge of the music. The Tony Award winner wrote many songs for the film, including "Surface Pressure" and "We Don't Talk About Bruno," which debuted at number five on the Billboard charts.

Mirabel is the only kid in the Madrigal family without a gift, something she appears to have done to herself. When it's time for someone to receive their gift, the Madrigals hold a ceremony. Encanto depicts the children visiting Abuela Alma (Mara Cecilia Botero), touching a mystical candle, and reaching for the door that would unveil their present. However, according to a fan notion (via Reddit), Mirabel washes her hands on her garments after touching the candle. This might finally explain why Mirabel isn't granted abilities.

Mirabel's hand-wiping moment is significant, despite its little size. After all, the film depicts Mirabel's cousin Antonio (Ravi Cabot-Conyers) gaining his talent of animal communication. He does not, however, clean his hands after touching the candle. Anything that distinguishes Mirabel from her family might be a clue as to why she doesn't receive a present, thus hand-wiping is an option. Mirabel casually swept her miraculous gift aside without realizing it. Encanto presents Mirabel's gift ceremony alongside Antonio's, and one of the most noticeable distinctions between them is the hand-wiping moment.

There are, of course, other choices in Encanto. For example, the Madrigal family is unaware of their magical skills and the miracle that bestowed them with them. All Abuela Alma knows is that the magic appeared after the death of her husband Pedro, and it became a component of a candle that would never go out. It's not a precise science. Mirable may have been fated to never get a gift in the first place. Mirabel Madrigal's actual talent, after all, is following in Abuela Alma's footsteps, leading the family and assisting when they are in need. Abuela Alma even claims that she sought Pedro for assistance and that he sent Mirabel to her. Mirabel may have given up her talent by cleansing her hands in the end, but she followed Abuela's advice.
