Astranis will Provide Satellite Internet in the Philippines

Astranis' Satellite Internet will benefit millions of Filipinos and help to improve the country's economy and society
California-based company Astranis is set to offer satellite-based internet connectivity in the Philippines next year. The company is currently preparing to deploy a satellite that will provide service to 2 million Filipinos, especially those in underserved communities.

Astranis is partnering with satellite services provider Orbits Corp. in delivering the modern technology into the country. The latter has a sister company, HTech Corp., which is an internet service provider.

The company noted the need to build satellite-based internet infrastructure for the country to provide coverage in remote areas in mountains and islands where traditional telecommunication towers are challenging to mount on.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology is focused on bringing internet services in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas, which comprise 65 percent of the country. As such, tech mogul Elon Musk's Starlink Internet Services Philippines was granted the license to operate as an internet service provider in the country last year.

Luxembourg-based connectivity solutions firm SES and local technology startup Quicksilver Satcom Ventures, meanwhile, expressed interest to provide satellite services as well in the past year.
"We in the space industry are all working together to solve the same problem, a problem that requires space-based solutions," said an Astranis spokesperson.
Founded in 2015, Astranis is also setting up business in Alaska, Peru and North America. It has raised over $400 million in funding rounds participated by global investors.

How will satellite internet work in the Philippines?

Astranis' satellite will be placed in geosynchronous orbit, which is 36,000 kilometers above the Earth. This will allow the satellite to provide continuous coverage to a specific area.

The satellite will use a phased array antenna to transmit and receive data. This type of antenna is more efficient than traditional satellite antennas and can provide faster speeds and lower latency.

The satellite will be connected to the internet via fiber optic cables. This will ensure that the data transmitted to and from the satellite is always reliable.

Who will be able to use satellite internet in the Philippines?

Astranis' satellite will be able to provide service to homes, businesses, and government agencies in the Philippines. The company is targeting underserved communities, such as those in remote areas and islands.

The cost of satellite internet will vary depending on the speed and data plan that the customer chooses. However, Astranis expects that the cost will be comparable to other forms of internet access.
