Luxury vehicles are often targeted because they are more valuable
The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) has released its report on the most stolen vehicles in the United States. The report ranks vehicles based on whole-vehicle theft claims per 1,000 vehicles for the model years between 2020 and 2022, adjusted to account for demographic and geographic factors.
The Top 15 most stolen vehicles in the United States are:
- Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat
- Dodge Charger HEMI
- Infiniti Q50
- Dodge Challenger
- Land Rover Range Rover Sport 4WD
- Kia Sportage
- Land Rover Range Rover 4WD
- Kia Forte
- Kia Rio
- BMW X6 4WD
- Honda CR-V 4WD
- Ford F-250 SuperCrew 4WD
- BMW X7 4WD
- Ford F-350 SuperCrew 4WD
- Kia Sportage 4WD
Dodge and Kia vehicles dominate the list, with seven of the top 15 spots. This is likely due to the popularity of these brands, as well as the fact that they are often equipped with desirable features that make them attractive to thieves, such as remote start and keyless entry.
Other factors that can make a vehicle more likely to be stolen include its age, make, model, and location. Older vehicles are more likely to be stolen because they are often less secure than newer vehicles. Also, certain makes and models are more popular among thieves than others. For example, luxury vehicles are often targeted because they are more valuable.
Finally, the location of a vehicle can also play a role in its likelihood of being stolen. Vehicles that are parked in high-crime areas are more likely to be stolen than vehicles that are parked in low-crime areas.
If you want to protect your vehicle from theft, there are a few things you can do:
- Park in well-lit areas.
- Install a security system.
- Use a steering wheel lock.
- Don't leave valuables in your vehicle.
- Keep your doors locked, even when you're just running into a store for a few minutes.
By taking these precautions, you can help to reduce the risk of your vehicle being stolen.
Here are some additional tips to help protect your vehicle from theft:
- Register your vehicle with a theft-recovery service.
- Keep your VIN number in a safe place.
- Inspect your vehicle regularly for any signs of tampering.
- Report any suspicious activity to the police immediately.
By following these tips, you can help to keep your vehicle safe from thieves.
