Juul Vapes, Only wants for adults to switch to Vape, and set Limitations for Minors
Juul, the e-cigarette company, is making a comeback with its new vape product, seeking FDA approval for its updated version after settling a $462 million lawsuit with six states over its role in the teen vape epidemic. The new e-cigarette boasts age-verification capabilities and a unique Pod ID chip to prevent the use of counterfeit pods with the device.
In a news release, Juul stated that their next-generation product aims to address two public-health issues: assisting adult smokers in switching from combustible cigarettes and limiting underage access to vapor products. They cited success in the UK, where over 32% of JUUL2 System users switched from combustible cigarettes to the vape device within six months.
The new e-cigarette has already been released in Canada and the UK, but in the US, it must undergo important protocols to demonstrate that it exposes smokers to fewer carcinogens than traditional cigarettes.
This marks Juul's return to the public eye after facing financial troubles in April and agreeing to the $462 million settlement with six states and Washington, D.C. The settlement was based on accusations that the company marketed its products to minors, claimed they were less addictive than cigarettes, and used targeted advertising to appeal to younger consumers.
Juul has pledged not to market its products to anyone under 35 years old and has implemented limits on the number of pods customers can purchase in stores and online. Age verification is managed through a connected app.
The company's Chief Regulatory Officer, Joe Murillo, emphasized that their next-generation vapor platform aims to meet public-health objectives and provide scientific evidence supporting harm reduction. They are eager to engage with the FDA during the review process to pursue this significant opportunity for harm reduction.
