"I think we know that it's probably not going to be possible," Julie Andrews stated of repeating her role in The Princess Diaries.
Julie Andrews has stated that she will "probably" not reprise her role as Queen Clarisse in Princess Diaries 3
Queen Clarisse Renaldi appears to have withdrawn from all royal obligations. According to a recent interview with Access Hollywood, Academy Award winner Julie Andrews, who portrayed her mattress surfing majesty in The Princess Diaries movie, has voiced "doubt" about resuming the role for the impending third edition.
"I think we all know it's probably not going to be possible," The Sound Of Music star Julie Andrews stated. "It was discussed shortly after [The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement] came out, but how many years have passed since then?" And I'm that much older, but Annie [Hathaway], the princess or queen, is considerably older. I'm not sure where it'd float or run."
"In terms of us doing it, I'm not sure," Andrews said during the conversation.
When it was discovered last month that Aadrita Mukerji was writing a script for a new Princess Diaries film, rumors of Andrew's return to the franchise began to circulate (Supergirl). Although the film is described as a full continuation of the original two films rather than a reboot, there is one big snag with continuing Mia Thermopolis' story: despite her professed desire, Anne Hathaway has yet to sign on to the movie. A Princess Diaries movie can't have all of their royal figures missing, therefore Disney needs to start making contacts right now!
The possibility of a third Princess Diaries film has been discussed for several years (The A.V. Club initially reported on a possible sequel in 2016), as have Andrews' feelings on returning for the project. In 2016, Andrews responded to the rumored script on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, saying, “The truth is I haven’t heard. There’s been talk about it for quite a while.”
Later, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year, Andrews spoke on her feelings about reprising her role as Clarisse.
"I think it would be too late now," the Bridgerton narrator stated. "A sequel was discussed many, many years ago. But I don’t think it ever came to pass. And Garry [Marshall] then did leave us. [For] especially me, it’s too far down the line now to go back to it. It's a great notion, but I don't believe it's feasible."
While Andrews seemed intent on not returning in The Princess Diaries 3, she might appear in a light-hearted credits sequence, portraying the former Queen of Genovia enjoying her well-deserved retirement with Joe the Bodyguard.
