Was Qatar even interested in hosting the World Cup?

The uproar has not only not subsided, but Qatar fans were even departing at halftime
The small Middle Eastern country, notorious for its dismal human rights record, is hosting the World Cup, but did Qatar want it in the first place? Whatever government officials were in charge of getting the world's largest athletic event to their nation must have wanted it badly enough to take the initiative, but local excitement for the event is non-existent.

The host country had never qualified for a World Cup previously, but was awarded an automatic bid to host the event, which began on Sunday. Qatar fans were departing at halftime after 12 years of debate and expectation, with the globe watching the lone game of the tournament's opening day.

I can't think of any other country's supporters that would do it. Consider how fervent the Brazilian supporters were in 2014. Consider the possibility that this was Brazil's first World Cup appearance. Do you believe fans would abandon the team just because it was losing? No, the fans would most likely remain seated long after the janitors had finished sweeping the floors. These supporters lingered and wept when Germany defeated Seleço Canarinho 7-1 in the semi-finals. There were several reasons why Brazil should not have hosted the event, but it was evident that a large number of people desired it.

Qatar is the first country to host the World Cup for the first time since Italy in 1934. Italy, however, was the only host country ever obliged to qualify. The Italians not only qualified, but also won the whole tournament.

Spoiler alert: Qatar will not win the World Cup. Qatar has no business participating in this event.

The team's caliber and the supporters' disinterest both testify to the fact that everyone previously knew, that this is one of the last sites where this event should be held. How's that for contributing to the conversation? Wait till you hear how I believe they obtained it. Although money may have moved hands, Qatar has refuted claims of bribery.

Even with a bigoted administration and a bad human rights record, it still doesn't make sense. The 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, three countries that currently have the necessary infrastructure. There will be no new stadiums erected, and just one stadium in the United States (Arrowhead Stadium) will need to be rebuilt. This should drastically reduce the number of construction worker fatalities, which were expected to reach 6,500 in preparation for the event in Qatar.

Bribing your way into hosting the event, having thousands of people die building the stadiums, and then almost emptying those same stadiums during the game like you're Texas A&M fans is outrageously insulting.

The opening ceremony showcased every home film of the country's princes playing soccer that they could locate to demonstrate that they do, in fact, have a "soccer culture." No one is thrilled the World Cup is there, including the people of Qatar. If the Arab country did not want it, it appears that it purchased it just because it could.
