Disney is working on a new Princess Diaries film but has not yet reached an agreement with Anne Hathaway

Because original director Garry Marshall died, the new film only has a writer
Assume you are the CEO of Disney. You're one of a few individuals called Bob, you are paid countless millions of dollars every year to put off deciding whether or not to weigh in on critical societal issues, and you've just chosen to make a third Princess Diaries film. This is a true continuation of the original Genovia tale, neither a remake or a reboot. You can't talk to Garry Marshall since he's deceased, but wouldn't your first call—perhaps even before saying "yes, let's do this"—be to original actress Anne Hathaway? Isn't it critical that you know if she's on board?

That's why another person named Bob runs Disney instead of you, since evidently that's the type of problem you tackle later. In any case, The Hollywood Reporter reports that Disney is planning a new Princess Diaries film, but "according to insiders," Anne Hathaway "does not have an agreement to return" (yet). THR reports that she has already shown a desire to return to The Princess Diaries, which cannot be said of The Devil Wears Prada (which Hathaway recently stated would not work in today's digital media ecosystem).

What we do know about this upcoming film is that it will be written by Aadrita Mukerji, a Supergirl and Reacher veteran. The first two films starred Hathaway as an American girl who discovers she is the heir to the kingdom of Genovia, a European nation. A modern continuation would presumably be about Hathaway's character having a daughter who is now writing her own princess diaries, but they could do it without Hathaway... perhaps there was a revolution in Genovia and the royal family was deposed, forcing the rightful princess to flee to the United States.... till a loyalist group seizes power and attempts to restore the royals to power?
