Zoomers are maturing, and TikTok is no longer solely for teenagers, or at least it isn't. The platform intends to grow with its core user base. As a first step toward maturity, TikTok is giving an adults-only option for live broadcasters who want to limit their viewing to those 18 and older.

TikTok provided two hypothetical scenarios of when and why streamers could want to implement an age limit: "Perhaps a comedy performance is better suited for those over the age of 18." "Alternatively, a host may want to discuss a tough life story and would feel more at peace knowing the chat is confined to adults," the business noted in a news statement on Monday.

Those arguments may appear naively chaste, but TikTok's decision to age-restrict some content on the network is unlikely to turn the platform become the next Only Fans. The network strictly prohibits most typical "adult" content. "We do not accept nudity, pornography, or sexually explicit content," the company's community standards state.

Nothing in the current statement implies that the rules would be different for adult-only services. Gizmodo reached out to TikTok for clarification, but did not receive an instant answer. It's worth noting, though, that just because the site claims sexual content isn't permitted doesn't mean it won't appear. TikTok has already battled with moderating, and films that should, theoretically, be prohibited based on community norms frequently sneak through the gaps.

The firm revealed its upcoming adult-only streaming, as well as many other adjustments to the livestream function. Users will be able to include up to five guests in a multi-guest broadcast, for example. In addition, the app claims it will update its keyword filtering capability to give reminders and ideas to artists who want to manage their own livestream commentators and interactions.

Notably, the business also disclosed another adjustment to live streaming that is age-related. Only adult users will be able to stream in the near future. TikTokers with a minimum of 1,000 followers who are over the age of 16 may now livestream, but that age requirement will be raised to 18 on November 23.

TikTok did not fully explain the change in its company blogpost, instead describing it as an extension of its already-existing in-app graduated age restrictions (such as the 18+ limit on monetization and the 16+ limit on direct messaging). The company did not respond immediately to Gizmodo's questions on the subject.

Under the heading "our continuous work to help keep our community safe," both the adults-only streaming option and the new age limit on who can stream were included.

TikTok's business strategy and interface are growing increasingly reliant on live broadcasting. Live streaming revenue was around 15% of TikTok's overall income in 2021, but it grew nearly twice as fast as the company's online ad business over the previous two years.

Because TikTok does not share ad income with producers, streaming is one of the best methods for users to generate money on the network. However, the firm has recently come under fire for taking a hefty cut of so-called "gifts" and "tips" offered to broadcasters on the site. A BBC investigation discovered that TikTok and "middlemen" grifters were apparently pocketing up to 70% of the money earned by migrants begging on the site in one especially horrifying example.
