"We want to do things correctly, so please be patient – we won't be able to disclose further specifics for a time."
CD Projekt Red and developer Fool's Theory have revealed that they would rebuild The Witcher on Unreal Engine 5.
This is one of five new games unveiled by the firm earlier this month, and it was formerly known as Canis Majoris. The business claims that it will be "rebuilt from the ground up" with Unreal Engine 5, and that it is in the early phases of development.
The business said in its release, "We want to do this correctly, so please be patient - it's going to be a while before we can reveal further specifics."
We're thrilled to reveal that, together with @Fools_Theory, we're working on remaking The Witcher using Unreal Engine 5 (codename: Canis Majoris)!

"The Witcher is where it all began for CD Projekt Red. It was the first game we ever produced, and it was a watershed event for us. Going back to this setting and rebuilding the game for the next generation of gamers to experience feels just as large, if not greater," said Adam Badowski, CD Projekt Red's Head of Studio, in an announcement post.
"Working with Fool's Theory on the project is equally as thrilling, given several of the folks there had previously worked on The Witcher games." They are familiar with the source material, are aware of how eager players have been to see the remake, and are capable of creating fantastic and ambitious games. And, while it will be some time until we can reveal more about and from the game, I know it will be worth the wait."
Canis Majoris was one of the most fascinating announcements in CD Projekt's forthcoming lineup, signifying the firm's first collaboration with a third-party developer. Fans have been waiting to find out who the developer was, but we hadn't viewed Fool's Theory as a possibility until today.
The Polish studio, founded in 2015 and touted as "a group of AAA veterans," has previously contributed to Baldur's Gate III, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, and Outriders, among other games. Fool's Theory is also working on Vitriol, a new IP created in conjunction with 11-Bit Studios (Frostpunk, This War of Mine).
The Witcher was CD Projekt Red's debut game, released in 2007, and while less sophisticated than its predecessors, established much of the story, tone, and mechanics that would characterize the now-legendary RPG series. We awarded it an 8.5 rating at the time, calling it "certainly a game you'll remember fondly throughout the years." If you're wondering why a remake was revealed today, it's because today marks the 15th anniversary of the original release.
