Because after all, they are going to mail them out
When the proposal to deliver free at-home COVID testing was unveiled in December, it appeared to be a letdown—tests would be reimbursable by insurance, and free tests would be provided at select community centers. Fortunately, the plan is already being implemented, with one key addition: you may request free tests through a government website, and they will be shipped to you for free.
How to Get a Free COVID Test at Home
Covidtests.gov is a good website to bookmark. Beginning January 19, you can order a bundle of four exams to be mailed to you. (Update Jan. 18 at 12 p.m.: Some individuals have already been able to buy tests, though I couldn't reach the ordering screen when I looked; this appears to be going out in phases, so give it a shot!)
According to White House officials, tests will be delivered 7 to 12 days after being ordered. You only need to submit your name and address to request the exams. You can receive shipment updates if you also provide your email address.
There will also be a phone number where you may arrange testing, although this number has yet to be released.
The four-test restriction applies to each address. (Fun fact: If the first test is negative, you're obliged to test again, so four tests is the amount you'd buy to test only two individuals.) Administration officials did not explain why they chose four as the magic number, but indicated that it's the best they can do:
If people use up the tests, we expect they will be able to access additional methods to be tested, such as pharmacies and online; our 20,000 free testing sites; and, for community health center patients, free testing and pick-up at community health centers.
Other methods for obtaining free Test
If you have private insurance, you must have it pay you for at-home COVID tests that you purchase on your own. This coverage went into effect on January 15, so retain your receipts and contact your insurance carrier for further information.
At-home testing are also available at community health centers and rural health clinics around the country.
