Here's what you should do if someone on Instagram is impersonating you or someone you know.
What Should You Do If You Discover Someone Is Impersonating You on Instagram?
Is someone stealing my Instagram account? It's a more widespread issue than you may assume. Scammers will occasionally spoof authentic Instagram profiles in order to dupe friends and family or to scam innocent strangers. If you come across an account that is impersonating you or someone you know, you can take action and request that the account be closed.
Scammers may imitate someone in order to trick their friends and relatives into clicking on dangerous links, providing information, or paying money. A fraudster may send a direct message (DM) from the impersonation account, for example, urging the target to look at an image they uploaded or a link on another website. The link could actually be a form that steals account information or attempts to download malware automatically.
How to Report an Instagram Account Impersonating Someone
To begin, you should establish that the account is indeed imitating someone by comparing their profile photo and most recent posts to determine whether they are similar to the account you believe they are impersonating. Then, send a direct message to the person you believe the account is impersonating to ensure it is not theirs. Don't send any messages to the imposter account. When you're certain you've discovered an imposter account, you should report it to Instagram immediately.
Return to the impersonator's profile and press the three dots symbol at the top of the screen to do so.
Select Report User, which should be towards the top of the list of available options. Tapping "Report" will display a menu allowing you to report the account with the rationale "It's impersonating someone I know." You will then be invited to supply some further information, including who the account is impersonating.
Following the submission of the report, Instagram's support staff will examine the account. Because there is no assurance of when assistance will respond, it is recommended to report the account as soon as possible.
You don't have an Instagram account, do you? You can still report impersonation accounts through the Instagram Help Center using a form. Instagram will seek identification in the form of a selfie and a government ID once you file a report.
There is no assurance that Instagram support will contact you, just as there is no guarantee that a report made through the app will be. When they do, it will be through the email address you gave when you filled out the form mentioned above.
What should you do after reporting an Instagram account?
You can alert friends and family members about the offending account while you wait for Instagram help to examine the report you made. Reaching out to the target of the account and informing them that they've been impersonated is critical if the account was impersonating someone other than yourself.
Avoid sharing too much personally identifiable information on Instagram, such as your address or phone number, in the future to reduce the efficacy of imitation accounts.
