The LAST will make you buy one, right now
Burger King, a popular fast food chain since 1954, is known for its iconic Whopper sandwich. The name "Whopper" has become a household term for the company, as it was chosen by founders Jim McLamore and David Edgerton to indicate its hefty size. Burger King claims that there are over 200,000 ways to customize a Whopper, an all-American burger with a hefty size and flame-grilled beef patty. The burger consists of tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, white onions, mayonnaise, and ketchup on a toasted sesame seed bun. Each time you make a special request for how your burger is made, you're bringing truth to the chain's slogan, "Have It Your Way."
The Whopper originally cost 37 cents in 1957, but today, the classic version can cost up to $11, the Double Whopper costs $12.14 depending on location, and the Steakhouse Bacon version is even more expensive at 49 cents. In 2021, Burger King celebrated its 64th birthday by bringing the price of the Whopper back to its original 37 cents for two days. This promotion was similar to its 55th birthday promotion, where customers could buy a Whopper and pay another 55 cents for a second one. Despite the high price, Burger King has managed to keep its Whopper-lover's genie in a bottle, bringing the price down to its original 37 cents for two days.
Burger King's Creative Foods Corporation reports that over 1.3 billion Whoppers are sold worldwide annually, with 41 of these signature sandwiches consumed every second. As of 2023, Burger King has a yearly rate of selling about 2.1 billion Whoppers. The chain offers about eight types of Whoppers, depending on location, including the varieties on its secret menu. Regular customers and curious foodies are likely to try these sandwiches, driving sales even higher.
Burger King also has a well-loved sandwich variation called the Whopper Jr., which has fewer calories but holds a place in the hearts and stomachs of many customers. In 2020, Burger King launched a "Moldy Whopper" campaign, showcasing the burger's deteriorating state over 35 days. This attention-demanding visual made customers wary of the burger with a 10-foot pole but effectively demonstrated that it contains no artificial preservatives.
In December 2007, Burger King intentionally discontinued its signature Whopper burger without warning to the public, known as the "Whopper Freakout." The chain did not intend to discontinue the burger but rather to conduct a social experiment to gauge public reactions. In 2015, Burger King proposed the creation of the McWhopper in honor of Peace Day, with the profits from the groundbreaking mashup going to Peace One Day, the non-profit organization that created the day of peace. Four other restaurant chains also stepped up, leading to a "Peace Day Burger" that crossed the Whopper with popular offerings from Denny's, Giraffas Brazilian Grill, Krystal, and Wayback Burgers.
Burger King Germany released a limited edition line of Whoppers inspired by pregnancy cravings in May 2022. The "Pregnancy Whopper" is a unique take on the classic Whopper, featuring nine different varieties with unconventional toppings, designed to cater to mothers who may have intense pregnancy cravings.
