Growing up an admirer of the great work of nature, I usually find myself gravitated toward the majestic Sierra Madre Mountain Range. It not only stands as a breathtaking backdrop but also serves as a critical protector of Luzon from the devastating impacts of climate change. The urge to save this mountain range is unquantifiable. In this paper, I will share my thoughts on why we should conserve the Sierra Madre and how it impacts our lives and our environment.
Importance of Sierra Madre
Such is the Sierra Madre, with an elevation of 6,283 feet and stretching for over 600 kilometers. It acts as Luzon's natural armor, absorbing strong typhoons from the Pacific Ocean, slowing down the storm system, and distributing the rainfall more evenly within the region. This function is crucial to disaster resilience, specially in urban areas such as Metro Manila, where flooding wreaks havoc on communities and infrastructure25.
Sierra Madre's key functions include reducing storm intensities, maintaining a rich ecosystem with thousands of endemic plant species, and absorbing carbon dioxide to balance climate change effects by establishing stable weather patterns, and reducing storms to prevent devastating hurricanes and landslide floods.
Sierra Madre, a valuable ecosystem, is at risk due to illegal logging, mining, and land conversion to agriculture. These activities degrade biodiversity and undermine natural defenses against climate-induced disasters. The main threats include deforestation, which has led to 90% loss of original forest cover, mining and quarrying, which destroy habitats, causes soil erosion and water pollution, and climate change, which increases susceptibility to unstable weather patterns.
