Dragon Ball: Daima - Toriyama's Final Gift to Fans

Akira Toriyama's highly anticipated anime series, Dragon Ball: Daima, gets a deep dive. Learn about what this de-aging curse is, all the new characters and conflicts, and where in the timeline of Dragon Ball this falls.
It's now time for all Dragon Ball fans to shift to a completely new adventure. This October 2024, exactly 40 years after its original release, Dragon Ball: Daima is going to be an entirely new original anime creation by the one and only Akira Toriyama. This new installment of Dragon Ball is thus far tinged with nostalgia and new storytelling aspects.

The Story: A Mysterious De-Aging Curse

At its core, Daima has a mysterious de-aging curse that turns Goku, Vegeta, Bulma, and most of the main cast of Dragon Ball into child-like "Mini" versions. That one aspect of the premise automatically points toward an interesting adventure as the heroes try to make their way out of the situation and find a reversal for their current status.

Unfortunately, Akira Toriyama died in March 2024 at the age of 68. Daima became his last work on the series of Dragon Ball prior to his passing away. Now, the anime is all set to be his final gift to the fans. He was very much involved in the development process, writing up the story and designing the characters and vehicles in the recent years when he has not been keeping in the best of health.

New Characters and Conflicts

Dragon Ball: Daima will introduce Glorio, a Kai-like figure who is blue; Masked Majin, a mystery surrounding the character; and Gomah, the demon who hails from Demon Realm. All of them would be highly significant in the larger scheme of things, particularly regarding the main curse and their quest to undo it.

The main conflicts in Daima involve the de-aging curse and the new dangers the characters will have to face. Heroes will journey into a mysterious new world in search of the source of this curse and ways to return their original ages. Exciting adventures full of action, humor, and nostalgia will erupt, reminiscent of the original series.

Dragons Ball Original Timeline Placement

Dragon Ball: Daima takes place between Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super, bridging gaps in the timeline. It is considered canon and made to better connect with the theme and form of storytelling from the original manga, as well as fit into the established lore of Dragon Ball while adding new layers to it.

Fan Reactions and Expectations

Fan reactions have been mixed since the new character designs in Daima, with some appreciating the return to a chibi style reminiscent of the original series, while others express concerns about the implications of de-aging the characters. However, many optimism is held in regards to Toriyama's involvement in this and the creative storytelling that can be done through the new designs.

Daima's theme song will raise the bar of watching to a whole new level as the return of the original artist who sang the first opening song in Dragon Ball performs this theme, making a stir among nostalgic and excited fans.

The end certainly gets fans salivating with the prospect of a new adventure in the world of Goku and others created by the master himself, with Dragon Ball: Daima getting ever so closer to its release. The unique plot elements, strong production values, and assurance of some great storytelling mean that this is one series not to be missed by any Dragon Ball fan.
