Transformers toys no longer need children to work for them. All that is required to bring Hasbro's new Optimus Prime figurine to life is a bout of fury
If I looked closely at my hands, I'm sure I'd see a scar or two from a youth spent patiently changing robots into automobiles and back again—a process plagued with pinched fingers. Transformers toys were a challenge for my generation, on par with old metal ring puzzles, but today's youngsters need to do nothing more than smash their toys to get the job done.
This is Hasbro's new Transformers: Bumblebee Cyberverse Adventures Dinobots Unite Smash Changer Optimus Prime figure, which has just a passing resemblance to the heroic bot commander that first appeared in the 1980s animated series. Since then, there have been innumerable Transformers cartoons and movies, and in order to make them all distinctive and marketable, the characters' looks and vehicle modes have altered dramatically. What hasn't changed is the multi-step process of transitioning from a robot to a vehicle and back again, which was especially exciting and demanding (and occasionally dangerous) for those who didn't use an instruction manual.
In comparison, transforming the current Optimus Prime toy from a truck into a robot takes only three steps, but it's much simpler than that. Instead of twisting limbs and folding body panels out of the way, the nine-inch tall Prime can be altered utilizing three smash actions, as the toy's full name suggests. Remember how angry you were as a youngster when Optimus Prime was murdered off in the Transformers animated film? Hasbro is now allowing children to channel their energy into tangible toys. After destroying the truck's top, youngsters just need to crush the toy a few more times on a hard surface to reveal Prime's bot form.
I'm all for each generation having a better time on this planet than the previous one, and I'm not going to pretend that I didn't have times as a kid when I wanted to destroy a Transformer toy after failing to correctly return it to vehicle mode. But it was those vexing childhood experiences that shaped me into the grumpy old guy I am now, with the insight and determination to gripe about current Transformers toys.
The Transformers: Bumblebee Cyberverse Adventures Dinobots Unite Smash Changer Optimus Prime will be released later this year, in October, for $32.
