Gladiator star Russell Crowe "slightly uncomfortable" with sequel. His character died, but worries sequel may stray from original story's morals. Wishes new lead luck!
Russell Crowe, the star of the original 2000 film Gladiator, has expressed some discomfort and reservations about the upcoming sequel, Gladiator 2.
Crowe acknowledged that his character Maximus died at the end of the first film, making his direct involvement in the sequel difficult. He stated that he has heard "a couple of things" about the sequel's direction that he feels are "not in the moral journey of that particular character." However, Crowe also said it's "not his place" to comment further, since he is "6 feet under" and no longer part of the franchise.
Despite his slight unease, Crowe wished the new lead actor Paul Mescal "the best of luck" and recognized that the sequel is "an extension of the narrative" that moves beyond his character's story. Crowe also admitted to feeling a "slight edge of jealousy" towards Mescal, who gets to experience making an epic period drama like Crowe did with the original Gladiator.
Overall, while Crowe expressed some discomfort and melancholy about not being involved, he seems to understand and accept the creative direction the Gladiator 2 filmmakers have chosen to take.
