Real Life "Ibong Adarna" in Mount Apo

Can its POOP turn you into Stone?
Recently, an exciting discovery was made in the tropical forests of Mount Apo, the highest mountain in the Philippines. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in the Davao region announced that the Philippine Trogon, also known as the "Ibong Adarna," has been spotted in this dormant stratovolcano located in Southern Mindanao. Kemuel Libre from DENR's Protected Area Management and Biodiversity Conservation Section (PAMBCS) XI managed to capture some photos of a female Ibong Adarna perched on one of the trees in Mount Apo.

The female Ibong Adarna has subdued shades of mustard-yellow underparts and an olive-brown head, while the male Philippine Trogon displays brighter colors. These birds feed on insects and fruits and seek shelter in tree hollows. They tend to avoid human contact and prefer the darker portions of the forests.

The Ibong Adarna, a long-tailed avian species, is endemic to the Philippines and is closely associated with the famous folklore surrounding the "Ibong Adarna" in the 1941 film. This real-life sighting of the Ibong Adarna highlights the unique biodiversity found in the country.

DENR XI is urging the public to help protect and preserve this iconic bird species. Currently, Mount Apo is closed to trekkers from June to August, allowing the flora and fauna to reproduce undisturbed. This period also coincides with the breeding season of several bird species in the wild.

The discovery of the Ibong Adarna in Mindanao is an exciting development, providing further evidence of the rich natural heritage of the Philippines.
