State by State, the Most Popular Movie Theater Candy

Which confectionery is most popular at the cinema in your state?
My neighborhood movie theater officially has a concession booth dedicated to hot and savory offerings—soft pretzels, nachos, and hot dogs—but there is rarely a wait for it. Instead, there's always a long line for the popcorn and candy counter, where the selections are less expensive, more varied, and simpler to navigate inside a darkened cinema. In the end, they just seem like a movie-length treat. So I was delighted to see Cinemark's map showcasing America's favorite movie theater sweets by state in honor of National Candy Day.

There's something interesting about this data right away. The map is based on actual sales data, rather than shady methods like "internet searches" or self-reported poll results from a few hundred people online—so the sweets listed are the ones people are buying in each state. Hard figures! Technically, "favorite" might refer to one of two things: either the candy most frequently purchased at Cinemark stores or the candy most distinctively purchased at Cinemark in that state in comparison to others. In any case, it's backed by real money, which makes staring at the outcomes much more entertaining.

Another delectable aspect of this data set is that movie theater candy is not the same as convenience shop candy or grocery store impulse buy candy. This is understandable for anyone who adores Cookie Dough Bites or Twizzlers. Sure, you can get either one at a Walgreens or a Rite-Aid, but how often do you get either outside of a darkened theater? Milk Duds, Raisinets, and Sno-Caps all have a cinematic feel about them that maintains them in a separate category in our memories. As a result, Cinemark's data will show something completely different than that of other candy manufacturers.

Let us now go into the findings.

Every state's most popular movie theater sweet

The image is based on concessions data from Cinemark's about 320 locations in 2022. Because Cinemark only operates in 42 of the 50 states, savvy cartologists will notice that not every state is represented by a confectionery option. Missouri, keep your secrets!

Here is the complete list of state favorites:

  • Alabama: Twizzlers
  • Alaska: SweeTart Ropes Rainbow Punch
  • Arizona: Peanut M&M
  • Arkansas: Sour Punch Straws Assorted Rainbow
  • California: Red Vines
  • Colorado: Peanut M&M
  • Connecticut: Peanut M&M
  • Delaware: Twizzlers
  • Florida: Buncha Crunch
  • Georgia: Trolli Sour Brite Crawlers
  • Idaho: Red Vines
  • Illinois: Buncha Crunch
  • Indiana: Cookie Dough Bites
  • Iowa: M&M Plain Milk Chocolate
  • Kansas: Reese’s Pieces
  • Kentucky: Cookie Dough Bites
  • Louisiana: Peanut M&M
  • Maryland: Twizzlers
  • Massachusetts: Peanut M&M
  • Michigan: Buncha Crunch
  • Minnesota: Buncha Crunch
  • Mississippi: Sour Punch Straws Assorted Rainbow
  • Montana: Cookie Dough Bites
  • Nevada: Red Vines
  • New Hampshire: Peanut M&M
  • New Jersey: Peanut M&M
  • New Mexico: Peanut M&M
  • New York: Cookie Dough Bites
  • North Carolina: Trolli Sour Brite Crawlers
  • Ohio: Cookie Dough Bites
  • Oklahoma: Peanut M&M
  • Oregon: Red Vines
  • Pennsylvania: Peanut M&M
  • South Carolina: Twizzlers
  • South Dakota: Cookie Dough Bites
  • Tennessee: Reese’s Pieces
  • Texas: Peanut M&M
  • Utah: Red Vines
  • Virginia: Peanut M&M
  • Washington: Red Vines
  • West Virginia: Cookie Dough Bites
  • Wisconsin: Peanut M&M
Peanut M&M's were the most popular, with 13 states claiming it as a favorite. For some reason, Peanut appears to be the most popular movie theater M&M. What makes you think that? You'd think it'd be something less related to allergies. Perhaps the yellow bag is easier to find in the dark.

Twizzlers and Red Vines have divided the country as usual, with the latter eking out a close victory, scooping up six states to Twizzler's four. That varies from what Instacart data tells us about people's licorice habits, but consumer preferences are influenced by what their local Cinemark has on hand.

And who can forget Cookie Dough Bites and Buncha Crunch, which are beloved in seven and four states, respectively—two sweets that first appeared in movie theaters? Both were released in the mid-1990s, and as such, they appear to benefit from the same millennial nostalgia that other mainstream cultural touchstones from that era do. I think I picked Buncha Crunch for my 1997 screening of The Lost World, as well as Jack in 1996.

How do you feel about your selected sweet, assuming your state made the list? We'll never know what Hawaii's favorite candy is, but we can fight over Twizzlers vs. Red Vines until our faces turn red (haha).
