Where, When, and How did it Start?
Teachers, professors, instructors, and even those who bring the classroom to the streets are unique individuals who help develop the brains of the next generation. That is why, on October 5, the world celebrates World Teachers' Day to recognize teachers' achievements.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recognized October 5 as World Teachers Day in 1994.
On October 5, 1966, a special intergovernmental conference convened by UNESCO in Paris adopted the International Labor Organization's (ILO) recommendation to improve teachers' rights and responsibilities, as well as their "initial preparation, further education, recruitment, employment, teaching, and learning conditions," among other things.
The date also commemorates the approval of the UNESCO Recommendation "concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel" by the UNESCO General Conference in 1997.
To commemorate the occasion, schools and institutions around the world hold events and initiatives to acknowledge and honor teachers.
UNESCO and Education International (EI) mark the anniversary by forming alliances and collaborating with private sector organizations to increase awareness about the critical role of educators.
In the Philippines, the country celebrates National Teachers' Day on Oct. 5 and National Teachers' Month from Sept. 5 to Oct. 5, as announced by Republic Act 10743 - signed into law on Jan. 29, 2016 by former President Benigno Aquino III - and Presidential Proclamation 242 series of 2011.
World Teachers Day's subject this year is "The Transformation of Education Begins with Teachers," while National Teachers Month's theme is "Gurong Pilipino: Dangal ng Sambayanang Pilipino" (Filipino Teachers: Pride of the Filipino Nation).
