Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, 65, is widely regarded as one of the frontrunners to succeed Pope Francis, a move that would fundamentally alter the Catholic faith
According to the Catholic Herald, a London-based news outlet, whoever becomes Pope next will speak volumes about the Church's future.
According to the article, some of the leading contenders include Cardinal Péter Erd of Hungary, a "conservative canon law expert," and Cardinal Tagle of the Philippines, who has been "hailed by liberals" as a progressive symbol for the Church's changing demographic.
According to the article, Tagle's anointing would also indicate that Pope Francis' "liberal direction" would continue.
"A contest between Erd and Tagle would show a Church at a crossroads, not just between conservatives and liberals, but between the forces of traditionalism in Europe — the original heart of Catholicism — and the changing face of the faith, focused more in the developing world, but still largely conservative in outlook, not least on LGBT issues," the piece reads.
"If symbolism is important, then Erd vs. Tagle would be a contest not only of ideas, but also of perception and identity," the Catholic Herald concluded.
Tagle departed his local Manila role in 2019 after the Pope appointed him to lead the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples in Vatican City.
Tagle was advanced to cardinal-bishop just one year later, the highest rank in the Catholic Church's College of Cardinals.
His most recent appointment was as a member of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, which he received in June.
Newsweek claimed at the end of June that a Black or Asian Pope was favored to succeed Francis, 85, if he resigned, as has been speculated owing to his knee troubles and travel cancellations.
According to the paper, the likely favorites were Tagle and Ghanaian Cardinal Peter Turkson.
It is unclear whether Pope Francis intends to announce his retirement, making him the second successive pope to quit freely; however, whoever is picked to be the next in line might have a huge impact on the faith, which has an amazing 1.3 billion followers worldwide.
