Leody de Guzman, presidential candidate of the Partido ng Lakas ng Masa (PLM), announced yesterday his entire support for the decriminalization of abortion and the legalization of divorce in the nation
De Guzman stated at the Catholic E-Forum presented by Radio Veritas that decriminalizing abortion might avert many women's deaths.
"Many women's deaths would be avoided if such a hidden abortion system was not in place," he stated in Filipino.
According to De Guzman, such a policy will not push women to get abortions, but will merely minimize their risk if they choose to terminate their pregnancy.
He went on to say that the use of contraception is now widely accepted in society.
De Guzman stated his support for the reopening of peace negotiations with the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army-National Democratic Front at the same conference.
However, De Guzman stated that if the government is able to satisfy the communist insurgents' demands, peace negotiations will be unnecessary.
If given the chance to become president, De Guzman has stated that he would listen to the NPA's just demand and encourage them to end their violent fight.
