Higround will be launching two new Gundam-inspired models
Higround introduced a range of Sonic the Hedgehog-themed mini keyboards in August, including one with visuals from a classic Sonic level stretched across all keys. The latest keyboard collection from the business adopts a similar concept, but swaps Sonic for the legendary anime, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing.
Even if you've never watched the anime, you're definitely aware of what Gundam is about: enormous robots, traumatized teenagers, and dashing blond rogues in masks. It's a symbol of Japanese culture, with life-size replicas of the robots towering over towns such as Fukuoka. But, as well as the anime, Gundam is arguably best known for the hundreds of various Gundam plastic model kits, or gunpla, that enthusiasts can methodically assemble and finish.
That is the link Higround is drawing between this new collection and the anime. These keyboards, like the Gundam gunpla models, provide some amount of construction gratification with swappable keys, albeit considering the distinct style of each pre-installed keycap collection, we're not sure why anybody would want to switch out a single one.
The collection includes two designs based on Higround's Basecamp 65 boards, which the business defines as "more accessible gaming keyboards"—a fancy way of saying "cheaper options." The Basecamp 65 boards, which feature softer Gundam patterns and an overall white or blue finish, employ linear TTC White Flame mechanical switches, and each keyboard is individually numbered and included on a bottom plate.
The Gundam Wing x Higround Summit 65 is expected to be the most expensive model in this collection, with a keycap set featuring an illustration of a posed Gundam, a full CNC'd aluminum frame, switches that provide a "ultra-light linear typing experience that is less fatiguing for marathon gamers," and a weighted brass medallion on the back that should help keep the keyboard from slipping around on your desk.
The two Gundam Wing Basecamp 65 keyboards, as well as other items in the collection, including mousepads, will be available for purchase from Higround beginning at 12pm PST on December 9, but the Summit 65 keyboard will only be available for pre-order that day, with its eventual release date unconfirmed at this time.
While we've seen Gundam keyboards based on various programs in the franchise, this collection is intended towards Western audiences, for whom Gundam Wing, in particular, has been a popular entrance point into the series.
