Marvel is going all-in on the zombies, with a new Marvel Zombies animated series set to debut on Disney+ in the near future. With a new generation of heroes, the series will reimagine the Marvel Universe.

What If...? is one of Marvel's best episodes. The best episode of the series, in my opinion, was Episode 5, "What If... Zombies?!" The episode transported us to a world where The Avengers have been infected by a zombie plague and the remaining surviving heroes must search for a cure.

With the episode receiving generally positive reviews, it appears Marvel is eager to expand on this concept. Marvel Zombies, a new animated series that "reimagines the Marvel Universe as a new generation of heroes battle against an ever-spreading zombie scourge," was announced during Disney Day+ 2021.

Executive producer Bryan Andrews will direct the series, and executive producer Zeb Wells will write it. That's about the extent of the new animated series' description or details, so the rest is purely speculative for the time being.

Given that this is a "new generation" of super heroes, it appears that this series will operate on its own timeline, separate from the one seen in What If...? There have been several limited comic book series runs based on the Marvel Zombies concept, so it's possible that this upcoming animated series will be based on one of them. One of the most well-known takes on Marvel Zombies is writer Robert Kirkman's five-issue limited series, which was eventually adapted for What If...?
