Project L was first mentioned in 2019, but according to Riot, the game is still a few years away from release.
Riot Games released the first gameplay trailer for Project L, a fighting game rooted in the League of Legends universe, last night. The video featured a variety of League characters as well as an in-depth talk on the style of fighting game the Project L developers are attempting to build.
Riot Games has been on a League of Legends spin-off frenzy in the last year or so, with two LOL spin-off games recently released, as well as a popular animated Netflix program. Now, one of the earlier spin-offs, Project L, which was first revealed in 2019, has gotten a thorough gameplay reveal, showing off how the fighting game would look and play when it ultimately launches... someday Riot has stated that Project L will not be released this year or next.
According to the developers of Project L, this is a vertical slice, and they still have a lot of work to do before the game is released. "We constructed this to hammer out the final design of the game," said Tom Cannon, senior director and executive producer, "before going in and building all of our stuff like characters and stages."
Fighting game aficionados will appreciate the fact that the developers behind Project L are committed to producing the greatest netcode available. The game will include rollback, but it will also make use of Riot's own network technology, which has been used to reduce latency and lag in games such as League of Legends and Valorant.
Given how early this all still seems, it's not surprising that the game doesn't have a release date. Riot intends to provide at least two updates on the game's status and development in 2022.
