They said, MISINFORMATION is a threat to a Smoke-FREE Future

Misinformation is a serious threat to the advancement of smoke-free society.

According to an international survey conducted by PMI, misinformation may impede adult smokers who do not stop completely from moving to better, smoke-free options.
According to a global poll, misinformation is a serious danger to society's progress toward a smoke-free future.

Despite widespread public support for smoke-free goods that have been scientifically proven to be superior to smoking, a study of 29,484 individuals performed for PMI by independent research company Povaddo revealed that many adult smokers are perplexed by conflicting information about them.

In order to make educated decisions, accurate information is required.
The great majority of respondents think that correct information on smoke-free alternatives is critical to helping these millions of men and women quit smoking for good:

91 percent of smokers who have converted to a healthier alternative and quit smoking agree that receiving correct information about how these products differ from cigarettes played a significant role in their choice.

Adult smokers who would otherwise continue smoking should have access to and accurate information on smoke-free alternatives, according to 79 percent. 87 percent of current smokers agree with this.

Smoke-free goods are causing some concerns.
The poll highlighted the real-world ramifications of misinformation for people who continue to smoke.

Many people are confused about the distinctions between cigarettes and scientifically proven smoke-free goods, hindering them from switching:

Almost half of those polled incorrectly believe that e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products are more dangerous than or equal to cigarettes (around 45 percent for each product category). These statistics are 39 percent for e-cigarettes and 40 percent for heated tobacco products among current smokers.

Only 41% correctly recognized the high quantity of toxicants (19%) or tar (22%), produced by burning tobacco, as the major cause of smoking-related illnesses.

Just over half of those polled (52%) believe that nicotine, while addictive and not without risk, is not the major cause of smoking-related illnesses.

More than six-in-ten (63%) exclusive smokers would be more willing to convert to a better option (such as e-cigarettes or heated tobacco products) if they understood how they differed from cigarettes and the science behind them.

Four-tenths (39%) of survey respondents who saw or read something about smoke-free products in the last six months got ambiguous or contradictory information. This percentage rises to 46% among current smokers.

More than one-third of smokers cite a lack of knowledge (33%) and scientific uncertainty (35%), as reasons for not contemplating converting to smoke-free alternatives.

To propel development, facts must combat falsehoods.
The general population feels that disinformation must be addressed.

Respondents typically expect corporations, governments, regulators, public health agencies, and other important parties to collaborate—lead by research and facts—to expedite the worldwide transition to a smoke-free future:

Tobacco firms are supported by 72 percent of respondents in their efforts to collaborate with governments, regulators, and public health professionals to ensure that smokers have access to and accurate information about smoke-free alternatives.

Current smokers have even more support, with 83% in favor.
According to 82 percent of respondents, their national government has a responsibility to objectively evaluate and analyze scientific information concerning smoke-free alternative goods from businesses such as PMI.

Intergovernmental organizations like as the World Health Organization, according to 83 percent of respondents, have a responsibility to give evidence-based information on smoke-free alternatives to adult smokers.

Achievement in public health
We are on the verge of achieving a smoke-free future. PMI thinks that with the appropriate legal incentives and civil society backing, cigarette sales in many countries may be eliminated within 10 to 15 years.

The propagation of disinformation, on the other hand, threatens to stymie such development.

We can only empower adult smokers to make educated, better choices if we provide them with access to smoke-free options and accurate information about these goods.

This, in turn, will expedite our goal of delivering a historic public health breakthrough in which smoking rates drop far faster than traditional approaches alone.

Philip Morris International Inc. (PMI) is a Swiss-American multinational cigarette and tobacco manufacturing company, with products sold in over 180 countries. The most recognized and best selling product of the company is Marlboro. Philip Morris International is often referred to as one of the companies comprising Big Tobacco.

Until a spin-off in March 2008, Philip Morris International was an operating company of Altria. Altria explained the spin-off, arguing PMI would have more "freedom," i.e. leeway outside the responsibilities and standards of American corporate ownership in terms of potential litigation and legislative restrictions to "pursue sales growth in emerging markets", while Altria focuses on the American domestic market. The shareholders in Altria at the time were given shares in PMI, which was listed on the London Stock Exchange and other markets.

The company's legal seat is in New York City, but it does not operate in the United States of America. Philip Morris USA, a subsidiary of PMI's former owner American parent Altria group, owns the Philip Morris brands there. Operational headquarters are in Lausanne, Switzerland.

With tobacco being addictive and the single greatest cause of preventable death globally, the company is highly controversial, not least because of its history of obfuscating scientific evidence around the health impacts of smoking. It has been the subject of litigation and restrictive legislation from governments.

In response to awareness of the harm to health of cigarettes, PMI has declared on its homepage the intention to replace cigarettes with smoke-free products, and to "switch ... adult smokers" to these products as the first phase of a business strategy, as a decision for the benefit of "adult smokers" and the company's shareholders and employees.

With the world-wide decrease in smoking in the 21st century, shares of Philip Morris were no longer considered the "safe haven" they once were. The company ranked No. 101 in the 2021 Fortune 500 list of the largest corporations by total revenue.
