Take My Breath Away – Berlin’s Biggest Song Was a Mistake?!

Take My Breath Away, an 80s love anthem, was almost never recorded by Berlin, but it made history as a Top Gun song.

"Take My Breath Away" by Berlin is an iconic ballad famously featured in the 1986 film Top Gun. The song was composed by Italian musician Giorgio Moroder, who was initially tasked by the film's producers to create a romantic song to complement the movie's emotional tone, following the success of the instrumental "Top Gun Anthem" by Harold Faltermeyer and the rock hit "Danger Zone" by Kenny Loggins.

The lyrics were written by Tom Whitlock, a mechanic who serendipitously met Moroder after repairing his Ferrari brakes. Whitlock revealed his lyric-writing talent, and Moroder gave him demos of two tracks, including the melody for "Take My Breath Away." Whitlock wrote the lyrics quickly, building the story around the already decided title.

Initially, the song was offered to The Motels, who recorded a demo but did not release it at the time. Moroder then suggested the band Berlin, with whom he had formerly worked. Terri Nunn, Berlin's lead vocalist, recorded the vocals after Whitlock made some lyrical adjustments. Nunn's vocal performance was originally intended as a placeholder, but Moroder loved it so much he kept it for the final release.

The song became the emotional centerpiece of Top Gun, prompting the filmmakers to shoot new romantic scenes to feature it fully. Upon the film's release, "Take My Breath Away" topped the Billboard Hot 100 and charts in the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, and more. It won both the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song in 1986.

Despite its massive success, the song caused tension within Berlin. The band members felt disconnected from the track since they did not write or play on it, and it was stylistically different from their usual music. The song's popularity and the band's internal struggles contributed to their eventual breakup. Terri Nunn continued to perform the song solo, and Berlin remains known primarily for this hit.
"Take My Breath Away" was born from a chance meeting in a garage, crafted by Giorgio Moroder and Tom Whitlock, and brought to life by Berlin's Terri Nunn. It became a defining song of the 1980s and Top Gun's soundtrack, winning prestigious awards and leaving a lasting legacy despite the personal costs for the band behind it.
