The Remaining Actual Car in Out Run Videogame is out for Auction

This Ultra-Rare Testarossa Spider Is the Only Way to Live the Out Run Life Authentically, and It's Up for Auction
One of seven specimens built for the Sultan of Brunei by Pininfarina that were never registered for the road will be auctioned off this weekend
When I think of a Ferrari Testarossa, I think of a convertible. This is due to Yu Suzuki's 1986 driving game Out Run. See, Ferrari never officially made roofless Testarossas, though former Fiat CEO Gianni Agnelli commissioned one. Later, various independent manufacturers completed their own unauthorised alterations, including design company Pininfarina, which was responsible for the Testarossa's enviable appearance in the first place.
One of Pininfarina's "Special Production" Testarossa Spiders is up for sale this weekend in London, which means that some lucky new owner will be able to live out their Out Run dreams in a way that very few people have.

This Ferrari Testarossa Pininfarina Spider is expected to sell for between $1.6 million and slightly over $2 million, according to RM Sotheby's. This specific automobile was one of seven created for the Sultan of Brunei, the maestro of the most sumptuous twentieth-century motoring. It's never been registered for the road, which is illegal but expected. I guess if I had seven of them, I'd probably just use one for driving anyhow.
The restoration of this unique Testarossa cost over $175,000 dollars. Pininfarina handled the roof mechanism issues, detailed the interior, and repainted the body, while a Maranello-based Ferrari specialist handled the mechanicals. The latter job included the installation of a new fuel pump and clutch, as well as a complete engine and suspension service.
Because there has only ever been one official Testarossa Spider, coachbuilders developed their own designs for panels that were changed, such as the engine cover. The Pininfarina cover for this Spider features two columns of vents that lead to one extra-wide vent towards the rear border of the car. The folding top is also visible, since it rests directly behind the driver and passenger.
In comparison, Agnelli's official Spider has a less-stylized engine cover with numerous thin, horizontal slats, but with the addition of a body-color plate to protect the soft top, providing a sleeker profile.
In Out Run, the Testarossa Spider retains the factory engine cover but removes the hardtop pillars - the nicest appearance, in my opinion. Ferrari's official, never-built design for an Enzo Ferrari convertible appears only in OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast.
