Marvel has now confirmed the existence of Batman in the MCU (Again)

Marvel Studios has now revealed that Batman, the Caped Crusader, is back in the MCU

Marvel has a history of adding DC allusions in Phase 4. Director Chloe Zhao revealed that Marvel Studios Kevin Feige was pleased with the reference, merely commenting, "Oh, that's cool."

James Gunn, the director of the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and the newly appointed co-CEO of DC Studios, has been a vocal supporter of a proper Marvel and DC collaboration, previously revealing that there have been discussions about crossover possibilities between the two franchises, noting that "it’s an impossibility."

Now, despite the fact that Gunn's transfer from Marvel to DC has been a significant topic in recent weeks, it appears that the experienced filmmaker still managed to embed at least one important DC Easter egg in his current MCU production.

Explained: James Gunn's Clever Batman Easter Egg

The following section contains spoilers for the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special follows Drax and Mantis on their journey to Earth in search of the ultimate gift for Chris Pratt's Peter Quill, which led them to Quill's boyhood hero, Kevin Bacon.

After a long and perilous chase, the Mantis successfully retrieved Bacon, sparking a funny dialogue aboard their spaceship.

When Mantis discovers Kevin Bacon is simply another actor on Earth, she urges him to "pretend" he's a true hero:
The mention of Batman in the Holiday Special is the second time the DC's Dark Knight has been mentioned in the MCU.

The Caped Crusader appears as an Easter egg in Eternals when Harish Patel's Karun presents himself as Kingo's valet, causing Gilgamesh to reply "Oh, valet." "Much like Alfred in Batman."

While addressing this DC allusion, Eternals director ChloƩ Zhao previously stated that the MCU has the opportunity to "pay tribute" to other heroes who do not exist in their own world:

"It doesn't mean we can't pay tribute and have a good time with these iconic ones that we all love to so much. I mean, who doesn't love Superman and Batman? Clearly our Eternals like them."

Will DC ever make a reference to the MCU?

Because James Gunn had yet to become DC's CEO at the time of the special's creation, it's possible that this allusion was made as a tribute to his love of DC lore.

Gunn has already stated his support for a Marvel/DC crossover. The Guardians of the Galaxy director recently described a crossover between DC's Harley Quinn and the MCU's Groot as a "exciting" proposition.

The DCU, previously the DCEU, has yet to make a reference to the MCU (yet). The closest DC has gotten is a subtle nod to Iron Man in The Lego Batman Movie, where the Dark Knight's Batcave password is "Iron Man sucks!"

Regardless, with Gunn leading the charge, it appears like a subtle allusion to the Avengers will make its way to a DC project, especially given that a fresh slate is anticipated to be unveiled in 2023.

Hopefully, these small nods between the two properties will lead to something greater in the future.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is now available to watch on Disney+.
