DC's Heroes of the 21st Century Receive Their Own Film
DC Comics has spent years emphasizing A-list teams such as the Teen Titans and Justice League in various forms of extended media such as films and cartoons. But it's only recently that they've began to focus on lesser-known teams like the old-school Justice Society and the futuristic Legion of Super-Heroes, the latter of which will soon get its own animated picture.
The Legion of Super Heroes picture, which was revealed earlier this week by the Hollywood Reporter, is situated in the same universe as 2020's Superman: World of Tomorrow and last year's Batman: Long Halloween. When Supergirl (The Winchesters' Meg Donnelly) arrives and has problems adjusting to life on Earth, Superman (Darren Criss) decides to send her to the 31st century to attend the Legion Academy and learn how to be a hero. During her tenure at the Academy, a group known as the Dark Circle travels in search of a weapon claimed to be hidden in the Academy's vault.
Other cast members besides Donelly and Criss are Robbie Daymond as Timberwolf, Harry Shum Jr. as Brainiac 5, Zeno Robinson as Invisible Kid, Ben Diskin as Arms Fall Off Boy, and Gideon Adlan as Phantom Girl. Darin De Paul will voice the original Brainiac, while Daymond, Robinson, and Diskin will play Brainiacs 2, 3, and 4. It will also reintroduce Jensen Ackles as Batman and Matt Bomer as the Flash, both of whom appeared in Justice Society: World War II in 2021.
Since Otto Binder and Al Plastino introduced the Legion in 1958, they have been a regular DC Comics presence. As an overall team, the Legion is perhaps most remembered for appearing in the DCAU's Superman and Justice League animated series, or for starring in their unrelated Legion series on KidsWB back in 2006. However, the most well-known members, such as Saturn Girl, Chameleon Boy, and Brainiac 5, have starred in many shows and films in recent years, such as Young Justice: The Movie.
Phantoms and Supergirl, acting alone or in tiny groups. In most of these cases, the team's story has been linked to a Super—usually the Man of Steel himself, but more recently, Supergirl or the Conner Kent version of Superboy.
The Legion of Super-Heroes film will be released in the near future.
