SPOILER ALERT: The following article includes DC League of Super-Pets spoilers. We recommend reading it just after you've seen the movie!
The DC League of Super-Pets is now available on HBO Max! The first twenty minutes of Krypto and his new friends' amusing trip are jam-packed with punches and punchlines. The vividly animated picture not only reintroduces the Justice League to the big screen, but it also introduces Super-Pets Krypto, Ace, PB, Merton, and Chip.
Whether you're watching DC League of Super-Pets for the first time or the 52nd, there may be some winks and nods you've missed in between laughter. Here are a few observations we made while watching the super-fur fly.
The incredible cast is, of obviously, the first thing that comes to mind. The heavy hitters include Dwayne Johnson as Krypto, Kevin Hart as Ace, and Kate McKinnon as Lulu. There's also Diego Luna as Chip (a sweet, relatable Chip), Jameela Jamil as Wonder Woman, Jemaine Clement as Aquaman, and Keanu Reeves as Batman. That's correct. Batman is played by Keanu Reeves. When the credits roll, peruse the cast list for more surprises.
Some of the musical motifs will be quite familiar to you. You'll notice the Superman theme, as well as a nod to John Williams' "The Planet Krypton" when Kal-spaceship El's prepares to blast off into space. The motifs of Batman and Wonder Woman are also very obvious throughout their entrances.
Superman and Krypto the Super-Dog go on a walk and encounter a Brainiac robot before heading to the park to play fetch.
Listen for a magical mention of Mister Mxyzptlk in Lois Lane's first on-camera report.
Squeezy Bruce
When Krypto puts on his secret identity glasses, he transforms into...Bark Kent! It's just one of many wonderful puns that parents will appreciate.
Mercy Graves is back by Lex Luthor's side. Maya Erskine voices Mercy, Lex's faithful chauffeur and bodyguard who first appeared in Superman: The Animated Series before moving on to the comics and other adventures.
Wayne Technology may be found everywhere, from the microwave in which Krypto prepares popcorn to the most expensive television sets.
Clark Kent keeps a Dinah Lance LP in his record collection, directly underneath Kandor's Bottle City.
Merton's shell is covered in stickers, including one for the Metropolis Meteors, the city's baseball franchise. Their domed stadium makes an appearance as well.
The Daily Planet News Network, for which Lois Lane works, is at the top of the chyron game. "Infinite Guinea Pig Crisis" and "That Escalated Quickly" are just two of the amusing captions on their news bulletins.
Among Metropolis' buildings, one carries the name Kord—as in Ted Kord, the Blue Beetle.
In Metropolis, you might miss signs advertising Hex's Texas Steak (h/t Jonah Hex), the Big Belly Burger beside the Daily Planet, and Two-Face Records if you blink.
Every film should include a training montage set to epic '80s hits. That is not an Easter egg, but rather a fact.
Jessica Cruz discusses a raccoon she thought was her pet on the Green Lantern planet of Oa before realizing he had a...different intention. B'rr, the raccoon-like Green Lantern from Sector 1014, is most likely her reference.
Ace's startlingly deep remark, "You can't have justice without truth," mirrors Superman's legendary tagline.
While recounting his different allies, Batman adds, "And whoever Morgan Freeman played." He's referring to Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, in which Freeman played the invaluable Lucius Fox.
We had to ask director Jared Stern about Mark and Keith's unusual superhero names: "They came from an improv Kate McKinnon did that made us giggle," Stern says. "They were supposed to have superhero names, but her joke changed them to Mark and Keith, which I rather like."
We also had to inquire about Dog-eager El's request to "Tell Gail I said hello!"
"Keith David knows our production accountant Gail," Stern says as the story concludes. "He urged us to pass along his best wishes after the recording session." But the way he said it made us pleased, and we were still recording, so it made it into the film! ”
Stay till the end for a peek of another DC Universe character to be played by Dwayne Johnson! It's a strong contender for the most amusing exchange in the film, so don't miss it.
