Braveheart Inspired Silent Hill's Most Iconic Villain

Pyramid Head appears to have Scottish ancestors
Pyramid Head, probably Silent Hill's most horrifying and legendary villain, was inspired by an odd source: a background character in Bracveheart.

Masahiro Ito, the director of Silent Hill 2, recently shared on Twitter that the "inspiration for the background of Pyramid Head from [Silent Hill 2] as the executioner. From a film Braveheart."

Ito started developing Pyramid Head based on that Braveheart figure, and he refined the style by studying other films and books where individuals wear bags on their heads, and he "came up with the idea of an executioner of the ancient town."

Ito also quoted a post he made in 2017 on some of the oil and acrylic paints he made while studying art. He presented four images from his 'Strange Head' series, which he developed between 1993 and 1996. The first image in the Tweet below is significant since it was another source of inspiration for Pyramid Head.

Pyramid Head first appeared in Silent Hill 2 and has since appeared in numerous more Silent Hill games. It's even made cameos in Super Bomberman R and Dead by Daylight.

This horrific antagonist contributed to Silent Hill 2 being named the scariest game of all time, and Pyramid Head's reveal ranked #36 on our list of the most memorable video game moments.

Pyramid Head and Silent Hill have remained relatively quiet for some time, although speculations and reports have circulated that a return may be in order. Recently, Silent Hill film director Christophe Gans revealed that "several" games in the franchise are in the works.

This tease joins an unreleased Silent Hill game named The Short Message being graded in South Korea, leaked photographs of a Silent Hill project, and a claim that Bloober Team is working on a Silent Hill 2 remake.
