According to a World Health Organization official, the new BA2 version of the Omicron coronavirus variation does not appear to be any more severe than the original BA1 type.

Vaccines continue to give comparable protection against the various types of Omicron, according to Dr Boris Pavlin of the WHO's COVID-19 Response Team in an online briefing.

The criticisms come as the BA2 subvariant replaces Omicron's more popular "original" BA1 subvariant in nations like Denmark.

According to statistics from Denmark, the first nation where BA2 surpassed BA1, there appears to be little change in disease severity, even though Pavlin believes BA2 has the potential to replace BA1 globally.

"When we look at other nations where BA2 is now taking over, we don't find any bigger increases in hospitalization than predicted," he added.

According to a Danish study that examined coronavirus infections in over 8,500 Danish households between December and January, BA2 is more transmissible than the more frequent BA1 and can infect vaccinated persons.

According to Pavlin, the subvariant is already dominating in the Philippines, Nepal, Qatar, India, and Denmark.

"Vaccination is substantially protective against severe illness, including Omicron," he stated, adding that "BA2 is fast replacing BA1; its impact is unlikely to be significant, however additional research is needed."
