Will the handgun in the program be as powerful as it is in the games?
Microsoft has been attempting to turn Bungie and 343 Industries' sci-fi shooter Halo into live action beyond amazing commercials and Webs-Series tie-ins since the original Halo was published in 2001. After multiple failed film attempts, Halo is eventually a TV program for Paramount+ (with several speed bumps along the road) that rewinds the clock to a simpler time in Master Chief's life during the Human/Covenant War.
One of the most intriguing aspects about Halo the show is that it does not follow the same timeline as the 20-year game series. Instead, it takes place in its own timeline known as "the Silver Timeline," so titled because Master Chief (Pablo Schreiber) will be aided by a new team of Spartans rather than his rather well established Blue Team colleagues Linda, Fred, and Kelly from the extended media. However, Riz-028 (Natasha Culzac), Vannak-134 (Bentley Kalu), and Kai-125 (Kate Kennedy) of Silver Team are claimed to exist in the main continuity as well. 343 previously described the timelines as being extremely similar, but some elements in the show will be different in subtle and not-so-subtle ways that will become apparent over time, such as Chief and Cortana (voiced by Jen Taylor, as in the games) actively seeking out the titular Halo ring on purpose rather than stumbling upon it.
From a human lady allying herself with the Covenant to the significant presence of Bokeem Woodbine as Spartan Soren-066, who abandoned the UNSC to join the Insurrection—aka the fringe sect of humans that the Spartans were originally formed to fight against—a there's lot to learn from the Halo video. The Insurrection is still alive and well in the program's history, as is the Covenant, and it's one of the many changes to the new timeline that may allow for a more compelling show and a deeper look at Chief as a person.
What remains to be seen with Halo is what it can provide to the series beyond simply being a retelling of events that millions of gamers have seen since they were children. Each Halo game has brought something fresh to the table that has enthralled and delighted fans for years. Given how long it's taken for this show to be released, and how picky Halo's fandom is in what they want from the brand, this new show may either be a legend in its own right or need to return to Spartan Academy and perform a few more exercises.
Halo launches on Paramount+ on March 24, 2022.
