How to Cheat in WORDLE

How to Cheat in WORDLE

In Wordle, If you're a liar, the trendiest internet game of early 2022 is ridiculously easy to beat.

Wordle has arisen as a lone bright light in these bleak early 2022 days. The basic online game, in which you get six opportunities to identify a 5-letter phrase, has surged in popularity in recent months, aided this week by a glitzy New York Times feature.

Its viral load was boosted by the game's ease of copying your score for posting on social media. This looks like this:

My Twitter feed was covered with tweets like that one by Tuesday morning, when everyone had emerged from their Omicron-filled holiday holes. And I understand—a it's wonderful game! And now I'm ready to spoil it all for everyone.

Where Can I Play Wordle?

On the website Wordle. (This is not an app.)

How to play Wordle's

So, the game's instructions show when you initially load it, so you don't need to read this section. But, for those who, like me, notice instructions and quickly disregard them before returning to read them after failing, here's the gist.

You guess a 5-letter word—any word—in the hopes of correctly predicting the proper word that day. Letters that do not occur in the proper term will be highlighted in black, letters that are present in the word of the day but not at the correct position will be highlighted in yellow, and letters that meet all of the necessary requirements will be highlighted in green.

It's up to you how you continue from here, but a basic method is to look at the letters you got right and then arrange them in a logical manner for popular words. You want to make sure you're only choosing terms that omit the letters you already know aren't there based on your initial guess. You just keep doing it until you get it correctly or you run out of attempts.

The drawback is that you can only play Wordle once per 12 hours, which is how I figured out how to beat the system on the first time.

The fatal flaw of Wordle

There are spoilers ahead. If you don't want your enjoyment ruined, stop reading right now.

Here's something I don't think many players—or at least new players—are aware of: the right word each day appears to be the same for everyone. (This is based on individuals tweeting the word and me asking everyone I know who's played it what they had for today's word.) Spoiler: It's "tiger" for Wednesday, Jan. 5.

As a result, there are two methods for cheating: the dull way and the enjoyable way.

The Uninteresting Way to Cheat at Wordle

The boring approach is to simply search for "wordle" on Twitter and see what others are saying; eventually, you'll discover someone like me tweeting out "siege" or whatever the Wordle word of the day is. Simply use that as your first guess and you'll get a 1/6 score. Tweet that nonsense to show the world how shady clever you are.

Wordle Cheats in a Novel Way

Okay, so I'm exaggerating since this isn't significantly better than the dull method, but it appears more clever—and has the extra benefit of allowing you to play the game more than once every 12 hours. It's also how I found out this afternoon how simple it is to cheat at Wordle.

Simply refreshing the Wordle URL will not allow you to begin a new game. To do so, open a new browser window in incognito mode, which will allow you to begin a fresh game. If you still receive 6/6, simply shut the private browser window and reopen it. Once you've worked out the word for the day, just do it one more time, input the proper word on the first try, and there you have it, you're a "genius," as the game proclaims.

The More Exciting Way to Play Wordle and Avoid Being a Scumbag!

Okay, so just because it's ridiculously simple to cheat at Wordle doesn't mean you should—honestly, just writing this has depressed me, and playing the game is far more enjoyable.

I'm sure smarter people have better strategies, but this is how I play. For my initial guess, I choose a word with a lot of vowels, such as "adieu." (Your guess must be a word.) This will give you a decent start, and (with a lot of dumb luck) is how I once got a 2/6 score. Next, choose a word with a lot of common consonants (I opt for one with the letters "o" or "y" as well, because those aren't in "adieu"), such as "stick," "stork," or "story," and then make a solid guess based on the letters you know are in the word while rejecting terms with the ones you don't.

Anyway, if you're upset that I damaged Wordle, remember that none of us will remember this game in two weeks, so I hope you'll forgive me.
