[REVIEW] Marvel Cosmic Invasion

Marvel Cosmic Invasion – The Arcade Brawler Fans Have Waited 30 Years For!
Marvel Cosmic Invasion is a retro-themed arcade-style spiritual successor to the popular X-Men series, developed by Tribute Games. The game is a throwback to the 1990s era, with characters like Gamora and Groot becoming household names and commanding the careers of A-list actors. The game is designed to be a back-to-basics brawler, transporting players to a simpler time. The game follows the story of an intergalactic villain, Annihilus, who has unleashed a universe-spanning conquest, and players are tasked with fending off him.
Cosmic Invasion is not a grim, Snyder-esque vision of Marvel, but rather brings the heroes to life as they were found in the comics three decades ago. The gameplay is simple enough that anyone can pick up a gamepadand become a useful member of a winning team. Beat 'em ups are historically amenable for button-mashing younger siblings, and this one is no different. However, with the expanded roster of 15 unique superheroes at launch, Cosmic Invasion seems eager to provide more opportunities for strategy compared to its forebears.

She-Hulk is the most drawn character, as she has loosely defined roles corresponding to RPG-esque arrangements. Captain America and his vibranium shield function like a tank, while Rocket Raccoon and his arsenal of grenades and laser pistols excel at taking down enemies from farther away. Everyone has what you could call an "ultimate" that can only be dispatched when an energy bar ticks full.

Cosmic Invasion is designed to be a co-op experience first and foremost, which is where the genre historically tends to shine. However, Tribute Games has smartly introduced a mechanic that makes the adventure surprisingly adaptable to a solo campaign. Players select two superheroes at the character select screen, and they can swap them out at will during the levels, like a tag team from Marvel vs. Capcom. Time the swap correctly, and you'll be able to chain together some truly flashy combos that look like a triumphant splash panel.

The game allows players to mess around with their own builds and construct devastating synergies without necessarily having someone join them on their quest to crush Annihilus. It may offer Cosmic Invasion more staying power than Shredder's Revenge, but it remains to be seen if it can sustain its magic across a full campaign. It remains to be seen if the Legion of Evildoers will be as fun to destroy in hour six as it is now. If nothing else, Cosmic Invasion makes an indelible first impression.
