Can Video Games Really Boost IQ? Researchers Have Found the Answer

Video Games improves reading comprehension, memory, and self-control, challenging the notion that gaming harms brains.
Researchers have found that spending more time playing video games can boost children's IQ, contradicting the notion that gaming is detrimental to young minds. The study, which was conducted in 2022, examined screen time records for 9,855 US children aged 9 or 10 and found that those who spent more time than the norm on video games saw an increase of 2.5 IQ points above the average rise. This increase was based on their performance on tasks such as reading comprehension, visual-spatial processing, memory, flexible thinking, and self-control.
The research supports the idea that intelligence is not a fixed constant that we are born with and that playing video games can actually help boost intelligence. However, the study only looked at children in the US and did not differentiate between video game types (mobile versus console games). Neuroscientist Torkel Klingberg from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden stated that the results support the claim that screen time generally doesn't impair children's cognitive abilities and that playing video games can actually help boost intelligence.

The team behind the current research acknowledges that small sample sizes, different designs of studies, and the lack of consideration for genetic and socio-economic influences have led to conflicting reports of the effects of screen time. They believe that more research is needed to understand the various factors at play in terms of how intelligence might be developed and formed, as well as how screen time might affect our bodies and habits. The research has been published in Scientific Reports.
