Important Update: GCash to Charge Monthly Maintenance Fee for Unverified Basic Accounts
Manila, Philippines – Starting August 6, 2025, GCash will begin implementing a monthly Account Maintenance Fee for unverified Basic accounts that still hold funds. This new policy aims to encourage users to complete their account verification and align with regulations set by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).
Why the New Fee?
This policy is in line with BSP regulations, which require GCash users to fully verify their accounts within 12 months of registration. The fee serves as an incentive for users to complete the necessary verification steps, ensuring a more secure and compliant digital financial ecosystem.
Who is Affected?
The new fee applies specifically to Unverified Basic Accounts that have not completed the full verification process and still have money in their wallet. If your account remains unverified beyond the allowable 12-month period and contains funds, you will be subject to these charges.
Understanding the Account Maintenance Fee
A monthly fee will be deducted from your wallet balance to maintain the unverified account. The fee structure is tiered, increasing the longer an account remains unverified after its initial 12-month suspension period:
- Years 1-2 (after 12-month suspension): ₱10 per month
- Years 3-4: ₱20 per month
- Years 5-6: ₱30 per month
- Years 7-8: ₱40 per month
- Years 9-10: ₱50 per month
These fees will be continuously charged until your wallet balance reaches zero or until the account is officially closed after 10 years of accumulated fees.
Account Status: Suspension and Closure
After 12 Months of Non-Verification, if your unverified account has a zero balance, it will be closed. If your unverified account still has remaining funds, it will be suspended or restricted. This means you will no longer be able to log in or use any GCash services. The monthly maintenance fee will continue to be deducted from the remaining balance until it is depleted or the account reaches its 10-year limit and is closed.
How to Avoid These Fees and Restrictions
The most effective way to avoid these fees, restrictions, and potential account closure is to complete the full verification process of your GCash account immediately. Fully verified accounts enjoy uninterrupted service and access to all GCash features without incurring these maintenance charges.
Claiming Funds from Suspended Accounts
If your account becomes suspended due to non-verification but still holds a balance, you have options to reclaim your funds:
- Create a New Fully Verified GCash Account: You can register and fully verify a new GCash account.
- Verify Your Current Account: You can complete the verification process for your existing suspended account.
GCash provides a ticketing process to facilitate the transfer of funds to a new verified account or to temporarily lift the suspension to allow for the verification of the current account. You will typically need to submit a valid ID through this process.
This new policy underscores GCash's commitment to regulatory compliance and aims to enhance the security and integrity of its platform. By encouraging full verification, GCash ensures a safer and more robust experience for all its users.
