The game's visuals, including the desolate land of Mexico and the photorealistic modeling of characters, have improved significantly from the first game.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is a sequel to director Hideo Kojima's first game, released in 2019. The game takes players on a journey across the United States, exploring the concept of human connection through gameplay mechanics that fundamentally reexamine the act of movement. The game's visuals, including the desolate land of Mexico and the photorealistic modeling of characters, have improved significantly from the first game.
The setting moves from the rebuilt UCA to the Mexican border region, offering a more dynamic yet less certain experience than its predecessor. The story unfolds through Sam Porter Bridges, a legendary delivery man who reconstructs connections between people while uncovering the truth behind the mysterious Death Stranding phenomenon.
The game follows the same rules as the first game, such as managing cargo weight and balance while traversing unstable natural terrain. Footing must be secured on slopes, while the center of gravity must be controlled to avoid being swept away in rapid water streams. The risk of cargo damage is present throughout the process, making traversing the world itself a nerve-wracking task.
Death Stranding 2 allows the player to construct morals, making traversing its world smoother. Highways and Manhattans require a lot of materials, forcing the player to utilize the game's mines to gather them. Establishing trade routes has become more central to gameplay than it was in the first game.
Combat plays a greater role in Death Stranding 2, with new human enemy forces such as bandits and armed survival units appearing and their bases designed as stages with simple three-dimensional structures. The game has become more tactical, with remote stealth attacks and precision shooting with sniper rifles, assault rifles, and grenade launchers giving players a multitude of new options.
After a series of dramatic events, Sam will cooperate with Drawbridge, a civil company established by Fragile, a company that provides a platform for players to explore the game's various missions and obstacles. As the setting moves from Mexico to Australia, a new journey begins with a mobile base called DHV Mellin, named after explorer Ferdinand Mellin.
The presence of actor Luca Marinelli as a mysterious man in Death Stranding 2 leaves a strong impression on players. The mystery of who this man is and why he stands in Sam's way will have players speculating for sure.
