By learning from their worthy rivals and focusing on improving their own culture, leadership, and marketing, companies can achieve greater success in the competitive business landscape.
In business, there is no such thing as a winner or loser. Instead, the goal is to outdo yourself and improve your culture, leadership, and marketing. Companies should focus on finding players who are as good as you or better on one or many things and respect them because their strengths reveal your weaknesses.
A real-life example of this is when I spoke at an education summit for Microsoft and later at an education summit for Apple. At the Microsoft Summit, most executives focused on how to beat Apple, while at the Apple Summit, 100% of the executives focused on helping teachers teach and students learn. This contrasted with the Apple Summit, where most executives focused on helping teachers teach and students learn.
Simon Sinek tells a story of himself about the competition between Microsoft and Apple:
During my talk at Microsoft, Microsoft gave me the new Zoom, which was Microsoft's response to the iPod MP3 player. Balmer's intention was to beat Apple and make the product better, and they did a great job. When I shared my talk at Apple, a senior executive insisted that I had no doubt about Microsoft's Zoom, but the conversation ended because companies playing with an infinite mindset understand that there is no such thing as a winner or loser.
To outdo ourselves, companies should focus on improving their culture, leaders, and marketing. Learning from their worthy rivals can reveal areas where improvement is needed. Apple introduced the iPod, rendering both the iPod and Zune obsolete, as they were not competing against each other to create a better iPod.
In conclusion, companies should focus on outdoing themselves rather than trying to beat their competitors. By learning from their worthy rivals and focusing on improving their own culture, leadership, and marketing, companies can achieve greater success in the competitive business landscape.
