[REVIEW] Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes weaves a sprawling epic with a slow start, offering strategic battles and a nostalgic Suikoden-like experience.
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is a highly anticipated turn-based RPG that serves as a spiritual successor to the beloved Suikoden series. Developed by Rabbit & Bear Studios, the game is helmed by Yoshitaka Murayama, the original creator of Suikoden, along with other key members of the Suikoden team.

The game's opening sequence immediately evokes the nostalgia and legacy of the Suikoden franchise, with character montages, sweeping landscapes, and battles between friends and foes.  This emotional connection is further strengthened by the involvement of Murayama, Junko Kawano, Osamu Komuta, and Junichi Murakami - all prominent figures from Konami's Suikoden history.

The Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes beta, which covers the first 5-8 hours of gameplay, provides a solid glimpse into what players can expect. The game features a large scope, with access to multiple towns, two full dungeons, branching paths, and an expansive world map - a welcome sight for JRPG fans in 2024.  The gameplay is centered around turn-based combat, complemented by a cast of numerous characters, political tensions, friendships, and moments of levity.

In contrast to the more focused and action-oriented Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising, Hundred Heroes aims to deliver a grand, Suikoden-esque experience that spans an entire continent, rather than a single community.  This shift in scope and emphasis on traditional JRPG elements suggests that Rabbit & Bear Studios is staying true to the core DNA of the Suikoden series, while offering a fresh take for modern audiences.

Overall, the Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes beta has made it abundantly clear that the game is a faithful homage to the Suikoden franchise, capturing the essence of the series in both its narrative and gameplay.  Fans of the original Suikoden games can look forward to an experience that promises to deliver the same level of depth, character-driven storytelling, and strategic turn-based combat that made the series so beloved.
